The Belarusian group Bergamot, in my opinion, managed in its performance series
“organic life” to go beyond the limits of the classical treatment of this genre. And
also create the possibility of a multi-level interpretation of their action - from
universal to gender, thanks to which the action presents itself very contemporary.
The artists (he and she) simultaneously but in different rooms carried out gestures
of direct and symbolic destruction regarding their own social image and gender.
Volha Maslouskaya sawed off the high heels of her shoes, while Raman Tratsiuk
glued the soles of his shoes together with Super Glue, as a result of which he
immobilized himself; after which the artist limped and pulled him “off the stage”,
thus making an Ironic analysis of his own social gender and its signs and symbols.
The artists tried to bring their social roles to a common denominator. He - to dispel
the myth of the real man, hard-headed, she of the “unearthly “ and therefore
unattainable woman....
