QUEER BELARUS
Scenario: Paweł Leszkowicz
Video performance
2010
Ars Homo Erotica, National Museum, Warsaw, Poland
3 min
A script for a video performance commissioned from
the Belarusian group Bergamot for the exhibition
ARS HOMO EROTICA at the National Museum in
Warsaw, Poland.
As the curator of the Ars Homo Erotica exhibition,
I am entering a performance competition for the
Bergamot group. By doing so, I am participating in
the art project of this group. I believe that curators
must have the right to select works for exhibitions,
but they should not come up with works for or in
favor of the artists, but in accordance with the
wishes of Raman and Volha, I present them with
my scenario. This form of their participation in the
exhibition was the idea of the artists themselves.
The title of the commissioned performance -
„Queer Belarus”
Medium - video performance
Duration - no less than 1 minute, no more than 5
minutes.
Language - Polish with English subtitles,
or English with Polish subtitles.
Deadline for making the performance and
presenting it to the curator for approval - June 1, 2010.
The purpose of the performance is to present the
legal, social and cultural situation of gays and
lesbians in Belarus today. Europe is very interested
in human rights in Belarus, Poles are concerned
about the fate of the Polish minority, so let’s ask the
question about the situation of sexual minorities in
this remarkable country. All the more so because
there are increasing voices about organizing
a parade in Minsk.
I ask the artists of the Bergamot group to learn
about the situation of gays and lesbians in Belarus,
conduct research on the subject, learn about the
history of the emancipation movement, interview
members of the organization.
Based on the collected material, I ask you to prepare
a short simulation of a Belarusian TV program
reporting on the situation of gays and lesbians in
Belarus.
„The program” is to be precisely a video
performance by artists, who will participate like TV
presenters summarizing the situation or experts on
the subject. The data given is supposed to capture
the specifics of the situation of gays and lesbians in
their country, but also give the audience information
about the most interesting events, phenomena,
activists and actions.
Within the conventions of a news program, artists
are allowed to be inventive and imaginative, as long
as they convey key and interesting news on the topic
posed.
